Idaho Equine Hospital- Externship Program

Facility:    The Idaho Equine Hospital is a 45 year old practice.  The facility is eight years old and includes one surgical suite, two induction/recovery stalls,  separate treatment/work up areas for surgery, medicine, reproduction and herd health.  A nuclear scintigraphy suite, pharmacy, laboratory, breeding area and indoor arena are also part of the facility.  There are 25 indoor stalls, 17 outdoor stalls and 4 isolation stalls.  Three fully equipped vehicles are available for ambulatory calls.

Case Load:    The practice evaluates about 7000 cases per year.  Approximately 1500 lameness exams are performed each year.  More that 100 mares are presented for artificial insemination and there are over 300 surgical cases in a year.  Medical cases are comprised of gastrointestinal, respiratory, dermatology, and neonatology equally.  Neurological and ophthalmology evaluations are also done.  The majority of cases are Western pleasure/performance horses and breeding stock.  The remainder of the caseload is made up of English performance horses, racehorses, endurance horses and a small percentage of camelids.

Contact:     Dr. Liz Scott is the primary extern/intern administrator.  The office manager can provide information and dates available.  Externs are welcome all year long, therefore there is no deadline for application.  It is recommended you make contact as soon as possible to ensure that there is space for you.  Variable lengths of stay re approved however 2-4 weeks is encouraged.

Practice Responsibility:    Exposure to and explanation of a wide variety of cases.  (This will vary with the time of the year) Afford as much hands-on experience as the caseload permits.  This will depend on the student's  current ability and experience.  The experience should allow students to get an idea of the varied clinical  skills and knowledge required in a quality private practice, and appreciate the rewards of becoming and intern.

EXTERN RESPONSIBILITY:    Assist with monitoring and management of hospitalized patients under the supervision of the interns or senior veterinarians.  On average 8-12 clinic hours daily can be expected and STUDENTS ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO ASSIST WITH AFTER HOURS/WEEKEND CARE AND EMERGENCIES.  Professional conduct and appearance are mandatory.

Living Quarters:     Shared basic housing is available for one student/  The student is required to make and pay for alternative arrangements if facilities provided are not to their satisfaction.
